Richard Feynman: A Curious Character

Richard Feynman, in full Richard Phillips Feynman, American theoretical physicist who was widely regarded as the most brilliant, influential, and iconoclastic figure in his field in the post-World War II era. He made his mark as an original genius, starting with his work on the Manhattan Project in his early twenties, through winning a Nobel Prize for his work in developing an understanding of quantum mechanics, and finally as a much-loved professor of undergraduate physics at Caltech.

Here is a short description of the personal life of one of the greatest minds of the twentieth century. This description is based on the incidents, and the stories described in the semi-autobiography of Richard Feynman named “What Do You Care What Other People Think?”

The book is divided into two parts. First parts highlight the Feynman’s personal life. This part account different stories and the incidents from Feynman’s life ranging from the influence of his father on his personality to the death of his first wife all the way to stories of his excursion to different places around the globe with his third wife. And the second parts accounts his involvement on the Rogers Commission investigating the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. This blog will only focus on a few chapters of part one which helps the reader to draw an image of Feynman’s personality.

Moving on to the book, the writer starts the book by describing childhood Richard Feynman. He described the way Richard’s father influenced Richard’s personality and developed a scientific temperament in a young boy.  When Richard was a young boy, his father would read out Encyclopaedia Britannica and would translate all the facts to the daily life so that you boy can relate. One of the incidents on the way his father used to do this as stated in the book is-

We would be reading, say, about dinosaurs. It would be talking about the Tyrannosaurus rex, and it would say something like, “This dinosaur is twenty-five
feet high and its head is six feet across.” My father would stop reading and say, “Now, let’s see what that means. That would mean that if he stood in our front yard, he would be tall enough to put his head through our window up here.” (We were on the second floor.) “But his head would be too wide to fit in the window.

This developed a habit of visualising hard to understand facts in a pictorial manner which even helped him in his career as a scientist (he developed a widely used pictorial representation scheme for the mathematical expressions describing the behaviour of subatomic particles, which later became known as Feynman diagrams). His father also encouraged him to understand the world by asking questions and finding their answers by experimenting. One such occurrence mentioned in the book is when his father “Why do you think birds peck at their feathers?”. It follows like this-

“Why do you think birds peck at their feathers?” I said, “Well, maybe they mess up their feathers when they fly, so they’re pecking them in order to straighten
them out.”
“All right,” he says. “If that were the case, then they would peck a lot just after they’ve been flying. Then, after they’ve been on the ground a while, they wouldn’t peck so much any more—you know what I mean?”
“Yeah.”
He says, “Let’s look and see if they peck more just after they land.

Other than Nobel Prize and Manhatten project, Richard Feynman is also known for his excellent teaching ability. The traces evolution of that skill is found in his childhood. He used to follow the same technique that was used by his father to develop Richard’s interest in science.

In the latter part of his life, he gave some lectures for the freshman at Caltech which were recorded and published as the Feynman Lectures on Physics which fetched his an award by the American Association of Physics Teachers. There is an interesting story associated with the award function stated in the book. He was accused of being anti-women because of two stories noted in his lecture. Those were-

The first was a discussion of the subtleties of velocity, and involved a woman driver being stopped by a cop. There’s a discussion about how fast she was going, and I had her raise valid objections to the cop’s definitions of velocity. The letter said I was making the woman look stupid.

The other story they objected to was told by the great astronomer Arthur Eddington, who had just figured out that the stars get their power from burning hydrogen in a nuclear reaction producing helium. He recounted how, on the night after his discovery, he was sitting on a bench with his girlfriend. She said, “Look how pretty the stars shine!” To which he replied, “Yes, and right now, I’m the only man in the world who knows how they shine.”

He was charged with showing women dumb and incapable of understanding nuclear reactions by a feminist group (Pointless accusation). So members of that feminist group started protesting in the award ceremony calling “FEYNMAN SEXIST PIG“. They were not letting Feynman give his speech. He handled this situation be smartly manipulating them and explaining that there are more serious places to direct one’s attention towards improving the status of women in physics.

There is a big spectrum of the personality of this great man. He was a stubborn, playful, intensely curious, masterful storyteller and highly original in practically everything he did. It is almost impossible to cover every aspect of such an illustrious man in a single blog.

I would like to end with one of his famous quotes-

Why I left NSIT(NSUT)…….

Yes, I LEFT NSIT AFTER the SECOND SEMESTER

I am a student currently pursuing B.Tech at IIIT Delhi, but before this, I spend 1 year at NSIT. So I find myself in a perfect position to draw out the downsides of NSIT

These are the shortcomings and drawbacks which I realised during my stay at NSIT –

Harsh Attendance Policy-

Policies at NSIT focus more on attendance rather than concentrating on learning. They have a rule which states that

The student who has attendance less than 75% have to submit medical leave and those who have attendance below 50% are not allowed appear in end term exam.

Because of the fear of low attendance students are forced to attend lectures even if they don’t understand what teacher is teaching. They are compelled to attend the lectures even if they could understand better by self-study.

Plagiarism Issues-

A typical conversation between two students one night before the assignment submission –

Friend A:    Have you compleded the assignment?

Friend B:    No,I am halfway through

Friend A:    DOING IT ON YOUR OWN !!!!!!!

Friend B:     Not at all, copying it from friend c

Friend A:     Send its pic to me too.

Doing your assignment on our own is an alien thing at NSIT. Students spend more time searching the person who has completed his assignments that actually doing it. There is no restriction by the admin on plagiarism. Assignments submitted by whole class is the same. Those assignments do not teach the student about the topic but either they teach them how to copy.

Professors

There are a few professors who are genuinely interested in teaching students, but most of them either do not have any interest in teaching and some of them not even have an idea what they are teaching.

Here is a true story:                                                                                                                                In my second semester I had a subject named Applied Mechanics. The subject name was identical for my branch and MPAE, but there was a slight difference in the syllabus of the subject for both the branch. Our Applied Mechanics professor instead of teaching the syllabus my branch taught us the syllabus of another branch (MPAE branch).

This is an example of clueless professors. There are many more examples of clueless professors. Lectures of these clueless and tired professors are quite dull but due to the attendance policy students forced to attend these lectures. Because of this, you will find a whole lot of students either sleeping or playing mobile games in the class.

Some of the professors who are genuinely interested in teaching students are not able to do their work because of the enormous workload of other office activities(like checking test copies etc.). There is no concept of TAs at NSIT which leads to a massive workload on the professor hence sparing them very little time to teach.

Syllabus and Teaching Methodology not up to date –

This line quoted below is the same line written in syllabus booklet of NSIT

“We update our syllabus in a certain interval of 5-10 years.

Is that so??

They have a lot of subjects in their curriculum which do not have any practical use and missing out some critical elements which should have been taught. E.g. there is nothing like communication skills or explaining how to use the Linux terminal.

Moreover, the pattern of education followed by NSIT is old and rotten. There is nothing such as an online course management platform(e.g. Google Classroom, usebackpack.com) with no use of audiovisual support(e.g. ppt) by the teachers. Although there are projectors in every room, none of them is used.

Student Clubs (society)

Now, this is irony of the fact that NSIT is a technical institution, but it does not have any well-established tech club. Whereas they have very well established non-tech clubs like the DebSoc(debating), Capella(dance) and Ashwamedh(drama), all of them are great in their respective areas. In the case of tech clubs, there are some of them but none of them is active or host sessions and programs regularly. One of the reasons for lacking club activity is that there is no effective medium of conveying the message to all regarding the event. If once in a blue moon, there is an event organised by the club then they have to print posters and stick them around the campus to inform everyone about the event with is expensive and time-consuming or they send messages in Whatsapp groups which are again not very useful to convey the message. There is nothing such as a mailing list which could be used to notify students.

Another point of concern regarding the clubs at NSIT is that most of the clubs which are active have a closed group of members who actually avail the benefits of the club, and there is high nepotism in selecting these members.

Campus and Infrastructure-

NSIT has a big lush green campus with a lot of open space and is full of peacocks and other animals (snakes, monitor lizards). Although NSIT has a vast campus area but space not at all used efficiently. The infrastructure is archaic and is in need of a major reformation. No proper lighting in classrooms, fans and lights not working, old broken desks are some things you will find in classes.

Hostels are spacious, and most of them are single seater hostel rooms, but hostel availability is scarce with hostel having the capacity to accommodate only 276 students per year whereas 913 students get admitted every year. The Internet is another big issue at NSIT, especially in hostels. Hostel rooms are not equipped with LAN connection and WIFI at hostels has poor connectivity with slow connection speed.

Conclusion

There are a lot of points where NSIT need to improve upon by updating its model of management and education. To implement these changes, the first thing that needs to be changed is the attitude of the admin of NSIT.

NSIT could be a good choice if you want to do something like MBA, Civil services after engineering, but certainly not at all right choice from the perspective if you’re going to make your future in tech.

Travelogue: My Fun Trip To Nehru Place

TL; DR: Conclusion

This is a travelogue of my trip to Nehru Place with my friends.

Our first midterm exam in college just got finished, and it was my birthday, and one of my friends wanted to buy a laptop so wanted to have a look at the price and specs available. So we 5 friends (Sanyam, Prabhat, Ishan, Himanshu and Me) decided to decide to pay a trip to Nehru place.

It is widely considered to be a major information technology hub of South Asia, so what be the better place to look for laptop and what could be better than a South Delhi birthday party (Budget of the party was 500 :P).

So we started our journey by gathering in Sanyam’s room. There we decided that there is a beautiful part near Nehru Place metro station and will also spend some time there. As Nehru place was just two metro stops away from your college, so we decided to take the Metro. As a group of college friends cracking jokes, leg pulling of each other was normal.

We boarded the Metro from Harkesh Nagar metro station and 10 minutes we were at Nehru place Metro station but we all were busy chit-chat that when we realised that we are at Nehru place Metro station it was late and the door of the metro was already closed. So we have to change the Metro at the next stop and then come again to Nehru Place.

(Outside Nehru Place metro station)

After reaching  Nehru Place, we first decided to look up for laptops so went to the Asus store.

There Sanyam carefully inspected the laptops he has shortlisted online.

Ishan too has to get his mouse repaired which was in warranty period so by the time Sanyam was checking out laptops Ishan went in search of repair store.

Now here is an exciting part, his mouse was not working because it fell from the desk but and physical damage was not covered in warranty, so we all decided not to say anything but controlling laugh when he approached the service centre was way more difficult than we thought.

So finally they accepted the faulty mouse and gave him the new one.

Then our next stop was the park. It was near the metro station, we saw it on the metro platform, so decided that we will navigate to park without the use of GPS. It seemed a simple task but was not actually that simple. In the end, we all didn’t know where we are but still as decided we didn’t use GPS but asked the way to park to a person and luckily he knew and guided us there.

Then after a long walk, we entered a park. It was not an ordinary garden but was really huge. We started walking.

After walking for a while, we came across a pond in the park. The scene was beautiful, but unfortunately, the water in the lake was muddy.

WhatsApp Image 2018-09-22 at 8.24.00 PM.jpeg

After the lake we found some swings in the park, they were a bit different from conventional ones then we came to know that it was an open gym set up by Delhi government.

IMG_20180920_175555.jpg

After some fun on those pieces of equipment. We continued our journey of exploring the park.

When we move a bit more forward, Prabhat saw logs of chopped of trees were kept there, and this triggered his environment lover side of his personality.

IMG_20180920_180426.jpg

IMG_20180920_180438.jpg

IMG_20180920_180430.jpg

He was really sad for those trees.

While walking in the park, we found a group of monks was carrying an idol of Lord Krishna and was travelling all across the area. Then we came to know that there was also a big temple of ISCON in the park in and those monks were from that temple. Those monks were also distributing books to the people in the park. Prabhat also had a spiritual discussion with one of the monks.

WhatsApp Image 2018-09-22 at 9.30.12 PM (1).jpeg

WhatsApp Image 2018-09-22 at 9.30.12 PM.jpeg

Well, this park was full of mysteries and surprises. Expedition in this park was not yet over. While moving Ishan found some local boys were playing football.

Prabhat and Ishan were excited to play football and requested them to let them play. Those locals were kind-hearted and welcomed them with full enthusiasm.

IMG_20180920_183600.jpg

IMG_20180920_182745.jpg

So after a friendly game of football we all four were hungry. So decided to head toward our party section of the trip. There were some great restaurants in Nehru Place Metro Station. So we all headed towards them. As per the rule, we didn’t use GPS to find our way out, but fortunately this time it was simple to find a way to exit.

Now it was party time. After reaching there, we shortlisted two restaurants. Epicuria and Taco Bell. These both had the cuisine of our liking and even pocket-friendly. But we have to choose one, Taco Bell was a bit expensive but we all wanted to have the taco and Epicuria was cheap but nothing new in it. After a heated debate Ishan yelled and said: “WE WILL TRY BOTH OF THEM”.

So we started with Taco Bell. First, we ordered one only one taco because we were not sure about the taste. The ambience of the place was beautiful, had a speedy delivery and excellent service. And the best part- “They gave complimentary coke with every order with unlimited refills“. All of us had a lot of coke, we filled half of our stomach by coke only. The tacos were also tasty.

(Straw went through the ice cube)

We entered the restaurant just to take one taco and taste it but ended up ordering 3 tacos, Baritones and even fries. And landed up with the bill of ₹ 400. As it was my birthday, so it was my duty to pay the bill.

Now the second part of our party started. We went to Epicuria. Epicuria is a food court below Nehru Place Metro Station having a wide variety of restaurants in it. As we well Almost full also short of money, we decided to go to Burger King. It was cheap and good for light snacks. There we ordered 4 burgers and fries. Delivery speed of burger king was great, and the dining area in the Epicuria was nice.

IMG_20180920_201025.jpg

(Poster of a restaurant in Epicuria)

IMG_20180920_194333.jpg

Same as before I had to pay for all these burgers.

Now it was time to go home, but we extended our plan to have something sweet. So for this, we turned to Dunkin Donuts which was also present in Epicuria. We ordered 5 donuts in takeaway so thinking that we will have then in our return journey but didn’t last even for 1 minute after the took them. Their taste was good but I felt they were a bit overpriced and service was also not that good.

IMG_20180920_200829.jpg

IMG_20180920_201002.jpg

The party which had a budget of ₹ 400 got extended to a budget of ₹ 600.

Although the box got empty very soon, we still carried it with us to the metro station in search of a dustbin and threw it in a dustbin.

IMG_20180920_201406_HDR.jpg

And then we boarded the metro and came back to our college.

Conclusion

This trip taught me that it is not the place we visit but it the people with whom we visit. Nehru Place is not any fancy place or any tourist spot. But the fun I had with my friends was exceptional. There were a lot of sweet memories connected to this 5-hour trip that is not possible to describe in words and are way beyond the scope of this blog.

So, in the end, I would love to say even an ordinary park has a lot to say, and even visits to ordinary places become special with friends. So you don’t have to wait for a long holiday to go on a fancy trip. Just find a company of good friends and a visit to even ordinary places will become extraordinary.

Movie Review – Intersteller

This movie is another classic example of the legacy of Christopher Nolan. It has a perfect blend of science, adventure, and drama.

 (Image is taken from wikipedia.com)

The story of this film is in some time in the future in the 21st century. The movie starts with the introduction of the hostile environment Earth is. There is no food left on earth to cater to the needs of all humans, crops have started dying, and only corn can be grown.

 (Image is taken from youtube.com)

There is much dust, and dust storms are quite frequent with scarce rainfall. Cooper,  NASA pilot, an engineer has to give up his passion for engineering because of the world needs farmers. He finds secret NASA facility and gets to know they are planning to make humankind shift to another habitable planet, select Cooper as their pilot and carry their expedition to other galaxy and some planets shortlisted from Lazarus mission.

As always Nolan went further a bit and presented accurate scientific data and information. This movie successfully explains the problematic topic of quantum physics lucidly. This topic ranges from how orbit around high mass object acts as a sling short which they use to chart their course to Saturn, also used it with Gargantua to reach Edward Wolf’s planet, to what are wormholes, how they are created and how they act as a shortcut in Space-Time fiber to travel to different galaxy which are thousands of light years away from us.

                                                                                     (Image is taken from pinterest.com)

There is also use of Einstein’s General Theory Of Relativity in some point in the movie, especially the scene where Cooper and Dr Brand had to explore the Millar’s planet and when they have to maneuver around the black hole, and the last scene in movie of Cooper meeting his daughter Murph is another classic example of theory of relativity.

(Image is taken from youtube.com)

Also shows us how gravity plays a vital role in space-time fabric. This movie also highlights the potential use of robots in the exploration of hostile environments and the instance of this are spread in the whole film ranging from the CASE and TARS controlling the spaceship to relaying quantum data in the black hole.

(Image is taken from quora.com)

Due to this high involvement of science viewers from non-science background might have difficulty in connecting to story.

This risk and sacrifice involved in the exploring a new home for the human race are huge with are very well depicted in the movie. Sacrifice range from the 12 humans who sacrificed their lives in Lazarus mission to find a habitable planet to Cooper sacrifices his family to save the earth, and also he risks his life by jumping into the black hole.

This movie very well depicts the human emotion and attachment. This ranges from how Dr Mann sent fake data so that someone would come and rescue him.

(Image is taken from youtube.com)

Even though he was the primary person, who encouraged everyone to risk their life but still, his survival instincts pushed him to do so. And also showcase the power of love and how it connects people irrespective of the distance of separation between them.

(Image is taken from bestwatchbrandshq.com)

In a nutshell, this movie is a must watch, equipped with fantastic VFX and special effects, really great acting, excellent costumes, some excellent dialogues and to back all this an amazing story which very well depicts all the aspects of human life ranging from love all the way to human survival instincts. And as science fiction, accurately presents all the facts and figures.

A MUST WATCH MOVIE
